All things considered we didn’t think this was a 5 star hotel and wont be returning.Dreams Onyx Resort & Spa is an all-inclusive, family-friendly resort. They had made us feel welcome and this is what made that hotel and holiday so special. On our previous trip to the Dominican we had stayed a few hotels down the lane and once we arrived we felt totally different.

We had already upgraded so I thought we would have the full benefits. Like we were only getting the part of what was available, that we hadn’t paid enough already. There seemed to be a lot of options to pay for extra this and extra that which kind of detracted from the special feel of the hotel.
Sounds petty but these are the small touches which make the good great and this hotel just kept missing these open goals. There is a proper coffee machine but they don’t seem to use it. Didn’t bother again after the 2nd time, They also have a lovely coffee shop but a shame they only sell machine instant coffee. The wait for a burger was about 45 minutes both the times we called by. Lovely for the wedding party but not so good for us with music going till 12 when we have young children unable to sleep. The hotel decided to host a wedding at the pool bar which was right outside our balcony. Shout out to Bobby who was great with the kids down by the pool and around the auditorium in the evenings. The staff put on some decent shows which were repeated after a week but nothing you’d of paid to see. The entertainment is held up by the main reception in a large auditorium. Down by the restaurants there aren’t that many seats so we always ended up standing around waiting for one, whilst trying to enjoy a drink before our meal. The Asian was our favourite and I would recommend eating here. It was my daughters birthday whilst we were away and we appreciated the way the staff made it special for her whilst dining in the Asian restaurant that evening. There are quite a few restaurants to chose from but the menus were a bit limited and after picking your favourite option on the first visit this left little on offer for a second visit. For a family hotel it seemed like a waste of the facilities. It did grate on us how we would pass this being empty each day and not be able to use it. The biggest pool is the Adults only in the middle of the hotel.
There is a bar near by so not far to go for a cocktail or so. These filled up pretty quick so best to be prepared. We liked the main family pool setup and got up early to reserve our places. The hotel offered a few options of compensation which we declined as we didn’t feel these really made up for the inconvenience. We had a problem with our room on arrival which was disappointing and meant we had to stay in a different room for a few days before moving. We had upgraded so we could have the Butler to book restaurants for us and Franklin was very helpful. The room was large and we had two double beds for a family of 4. The complex itself looks impressive and the hotel is laid out well. Quite a few good points but just too many negatives to return again.
